Birdsville Track

The 517 km stock route from Birdsville south to Marree crosses gibber plains and sand drifts between the Simpson and Strzelecki deserts. Since the 2025 floods cut the Cooper Creek crossing, vehicles have used a bypass track and a booked barge whenever the creek is running.

Permits None; when Cooper Creek is in flood the crossing is by a booked, fee-paying barge.

Before you go Ring the Mungerannie Hotel on 08 8675 8317 to confirm fuel; without it, Birdsville to Marree is 517 km with none. Check the SA Outback Road Report before you go, including whether the Cooper Creek barge is running.

What the trip asks of your 4WD

In the order a fitter would raise them, each with the reason. Up to three parts that fit for each, the first already chosen; swap any of them, or mark one you don't need.

Build it for your 4WD

Your rego or your model, and every part below is one that fits it. Until then you see the gear that fits any 4WD; the parts made for one vehicle wait for yours.

We look up the make, model, series and engine from the plate. We keep the plate and the vehicle details, never the owner’s, for 90 days, so you aren’t asked twice.

Make & model

  1. 1 · Suspension & GVM

Long corrugated stretches and gibber with a full fuel load are hard on shocks.

  2. 2 · Storage & racks

Jerry cans, water and spares need secure space in case Mungerannie has no fuel.

    • 3 · Tow & rear bars

A second spare on a rear wheel carrier is standard on the gibber.

    • 4 · Air intake

Bulldust and sand drifts throw up constant dust.

    • 5 · Bull bars

Cattle wander the unfenced track, especially near the bores.

    • 6 · Lighting & 12V

A dual battery keeps the fridge cold on the long run between Birdsville and Marree.

Each of these is made for one vehicle, so the parts show once we know yours.

The trip asks for these; the rest of the rig is yours to choose. Build the whole rig for this trip.
