Gibson DesertGibson Desert (Warburton to Carnegie Station)

Gunbarrel Highway

The desert road Len Beadell's crew built in the 1950s, driven today from Carnegie Station east past Everard Junction and then down the Heather Highway to the Great Central Road, with heavy corrugations, washouts and stony gravel. The abandoned section from Jackie Junction to Giles is not open to the public.

What the trip asks of your 4WD

In the order a fitter would raise them, each with the reason. Up to three parts that fit for each, the first already chosen; swap any of them, or mark one you don't need.

Build it for your 4WD

Your rego or your model, and every part below is one that fits it. Until then you see the gear that fits any 4WD; the parts made for one vehicle wait for yours.

We look up the make, model, series and engine from the plate. We keep the plate and the vehicle details, never the owner’s, for 90 days, so you aren’t asked twice.

Make & model

  1. 1 · Suspension & GVM

Hundreds of kilometres of heavy corrugations and washouts with desert loads are hard on springs and shocks.

  2. 2 · Storage & racks

Fuel, water and food for up to 900 km without services need secure, balanced storage.

  3. 3 · Recovery

Sand, washouts and clay pans that bog after rain call for a full recovery kit.

    • 4 · Tow & rear bars

Two spares are the minimum here, and a rear wheel carrier holds the second plus jerry cans.

    • 5 · Lighting & 12V

A dual battery keeps the fridge and satellite phone charged on long desert days.

    • 6 · Air intake

Bulldust and fine desert dust are constant on the corrugated sections.

Each of these is made for one vehicle, so the parts show once we know yours.

The trip asks for these; the rest of the rig is yours to choose. Build the whole rig for this trip.
