Permits None on the road itself; leaving it onto Aboriginal land needs a Central Land Council permit in the NT or a community or DPLH permit in WA.

Before you go Ring ahead to confirm fuel hours at Yuendumu and Billiluna; there is no fuel for about 586 km between them. Check the NT Road Report and the Shire of Halls Creek road report before you go.

What the trip asks of your 4WD

In the order a fitter would raise them, each with the reason. Up to three parts that fit for each, the first already chosen; swap any of them, or mark one you don't need.

Build it for your 4WD

Your rego or your model, and every part below is one that fits it. Until then you see the gear that fits any 4WD; the parts made for one vehicle wait for yours.

We look up the make, model, series and engine from the plate. We keep the plate and the vehicle details, never the owner’s, for 90 days, so you aren’t asked twice.

Make & model

  1. 1 · Suspension & GVM

Severe corrugations with a 600 km fuel load are the main test of the vehicle.

  2. 2 · Storage & racks

Jerry cans, water and supplies for the long gap need secure storage.

    • 3 · Air intake

Bulldust and mine road trains throw up thick dust for hours.

    • 4 · Tow & rear bars

A second spare on a rear wheel carrier is standard, and many travellers tow off-road vans.

    • 5 · Bull bars

Cattle, camels and kangaroos roam the unfenced road.

    • 6 · Lighting & 12V

A dual battery keeps the fridge running at remote bush camps.

    • 7 · Tuning & remaps

Many tow off-road vans here, and a towing tune keeps a heavy rig moving through the sand and bulldust without labouring.

Each of these is made for one vehicle, so the parts show once we know yours.

The trip asks for these; the rest of the rig is yours to choose. Build the whole rig for this trip.
