Glass House Mountains forest drives

Pine plantation and native forest below the volcanic peaks of the Glass House Mountains, about 40 km from Narangba. The formed forest roads are easy gravel and sand, but the climbs local 4WDers come for are short, steep and rutted, with rock steps up to shoulder height that break stock vehicles. HQPlantations closes the forests for heavy rain, high fire danger and harvesting.

Permits None for private drivers in registered, roadworthy vehicles; an HQPlantations recreation permit for groups of five or more vehicles; a QPWS camping permit for Coochin Creek, the only camping area.

Before you go Only formed roads are open to vehicles in the HQPlantations forests: the powerline corridor, fire breaks and unformed tracks are closed under the Forestry Act 1959, and winching off the trees is not allowed. Check the HQPlantations closures map on the day; groups of five or more vehicles need a permit.

What the trip asks of your 4WD

In the order a fitter would raise them, each with the reason. Up to three parts that fit for each, the first already chosen; swap any of them, or mark one you don't need.

Build it for your 4WD

Your rego or your model, and every part below is one that fits it. Until then you see the gear that fits any 4WD; the parts made for one vehicle wait for yours.

Rego · fastest

We look up the make, model, series and engine from the plate. We keep the plate and the vehicle details, never the owner’s, for 90 days, so you aren’t asked twice.

Make & model

  1. 1 · Suspension & GVM

Lift and long wheel travel keep the tyres on the ground over the rock steps and through the ruts.

  2. 2 · Recovery

A stalled climb needs a snatch strap from a second vehicle or a winch, and winching off the plantation trees is banned.

    • 3 · Rock sliders

The hard climbs are rock steps up to shoulder height and deep ruts that put a vehicle on its sills and underbody.

    • 4 · Bull bars

A winch needs a strong, winch-rated front bar to mount on.

Each of these is made for one vehicle, so the parts show once we know yours.

The trip asks for these; the rest of the rig is yours to choose. Build the whole rig for this trip. Read the Cathedral Steps run.
