Savannah Way: the Gulf Track

The unsealed Gulf section of the Savannah Way crosses a string of wide rivers, from the Nicholson and Calvert to the Robinson, Wearyan, Limmen Bight and Roper, between Burketown and Roper Bar. Lorella Springs has been closed to drive-in visitors since 2023, leaving about 380 km without fuel between Borroloola and Roper Bar.

What the trip asks of your 4WD

In the order a fitter would raise them, each with the reason. Up to three parts that fit for each, the first already chosen; swap any of them, or mark one you don't need.

Build it for your 4WD

Your rego or your model, and every part below is one that fits it. Until then you see the gear that fits any 4WD; the parts made for one vehicle wait for yours.

Make & model

  1. 1 · Suspension & GVM

Hundreds of kilometres of corrugations and bulldust, often with a camper in tow, are the main test of the vehicle.

  2. 2 · Storage & racks

With about 380 km between fuel stops, jerry cans, water and supplies all need secure space.

  3. 3 · Recovery

Sandy riverbeds at the Robinson and Wearyan crossings can bog a loaded vehicle.

    • 4 · Air intake

Early in the season the river crossings can be deep, and the bulldust is constant.

    • 5 · Tow & rear bars

Most travellers tow on this route and carry a second spare, so a strong rear bar and wheel carrier earn their place.

    • 6 · Bull bars

Cattle and wallabies roam the unfenced Gulf roads.

    • 7 · Lighting & 12V

A dual battery keeps the fridge running at remote river camps with no power.

    • 8 · Tuning & remaps

Most travellers tow a camper here, and a towing tune keeps the engine in its torque through sandy riverbeds and day after day of corrugations.

Each of these is made for one vehicle, so the parts show once we know yours.
