Soft sand tracks through mallee and heath around the Big Desert Wilderness Park, where vehicles are banned, with the Murrayville-Nhill track as the main route and harder dune country on the Border Track along the South Australian line. The tracks are slippery and dangerous in the wet, and summer heat makes this a cooler-months trip.

Permits None found for the Victorian tracks, where camping is free and first come; vehicles are banned inside the Big Desert Wilderness Park itself.

Before you go Ask Parks Victoria before you go how the tracks have come through the January 2026 fires near Wyperfeld National Park. The Border Track section in South Australia's Ngarkat parks runs one way, north to south, and is open only 1 Apr to 31 Oct.
