Dargo High Plains and the Blue Rag Range Track

The Dargo High Plains Road climbs about 66 km from Dargo onto the alpine plateau near Mt Hotham, and the Blue Rag Range Track runs about 10 km off it along an exposed ridge to the Blue Rag trig at 1,726 m, over steep, loose, rocky pinches. The descent beyond the trig is for modified vehicles only, and both routes sit behind seasonal gates from June to late October.

Before you go Check with Parks Victoria before you go: the Blue Rag Range Track is gated 11 Jun to 29 Oct 2026, and closures can be extended. Make sure the Dargo High Plains Road is open too; it has stayed shut into December before.

What the trip asks of your 4WD

In the order a fitter would raise them, each with the reason. Up to three parts that fit for each, the first already chosen; swap any of them, or mark one you don't need.

Build it for your 4WD

Your rego or your model, and every part below is one that fits it. Until then you see the gear that fits any 4WD; the parts made for one vehicle wait for yours.

We look up the make, model, series and engine from the plate. We keep the plate and the vehicle details, never the owner’s, for 90 days, so you aren’t asked twice.

Make & model

  1. 1 · Suspension & GVM

Steep, loose, rocky pinches before the trig need clearance and suspension that keeps the tyres on the ground.

  2. 2 · Recovery

Loose climbs on a dead-end ridge far from help call for a winch or at least a full recovery kit.

    • 3 · Rock sliders

Rock steps and holes along the ridge put the sills and underbody at risk.

    • 4 · Bull bars

A winch-rated bar gives the winch a home and protects the front from deer and wallabies on the High Plains road.

    • 5 · Lighting & 12V

Cold alpine nights at camps with no power make a dual battery for the fridge and lights worthwhile.

Each of these is made for one vehicle, so the parts show once we know yours.

The trip asks for these; the rest of the rig is yours to choose. Build the whole rig for this trip.
