Birdsville and the Channel Country

Gravel and gibber roads cross the flat, braided channels of Cooper Creek and the Diamantina from Windorah to Birdsville, about 380 km without reliable fuel, ending at Big Red, the tall dune 35 km west of town. Rain closes the roads for weeks at a time, as it did during the 2025 floods.

Permits None for the roads; a QPWS camping permit is needed to camp in Munga-Thirri National Park west of Birdsville.

Before you go Fill up at Windorah and plan on no fuel to Birdsville. Check the Diamantina Shire road report before you go; rain closes these roads for weeks.

What the trip asks of your 4WD

In the order a fitter would raise them, each with the reason. Up to three parts that fit for each, the first already chosen; swap any of them, or mark one you don't need.

Build it for your 4WD

Your rego or your model, and every part below is one that fits it. Until then you see the gear that fits any 4WD; the parts made for one vehicle wait for yours.

We look up the make, model, series and engine from the plate. We keep the plate and the vehicle details, never the owner’s, for 90 days, so you aren’t asked twice.

Make & model

  1. 1 · Suspension & GVM

Long stretches of corrugated gravel and gibber with a full load of fuel and water are what break stock shocks.

  2. 2 · Recovery

Big Red's soft face and rain-softened floodways call for tyre deflation and recovery boards.

    • 3 · Bull bars

Cattle and kangaroos share the unfenced roads, especially around dawn and dusk.

    • 4 · Tow & rear bars

A rear wheel carrier holds a second spare and jerry cans for the run without reliable fuel.

    • 5 · Lighting & 12V

A dual battery runs the fridge at bush camps between the handful of towns.

    • 6 · Storage & racks

Water, spares and food for several days need a tidy load that survives the corrugations.

Each of these is made for one vehicle, so the parts show once we know yours.

The trip asks for these; the rest of the rig is yours to choose. Build the whole rig for this trip.
