Exploring Victoria's High Country: Dog-Friendly River Camps and Classic Views

Last weekend, my friends and I set out to explore the rugged terrain of Victoria's High Country. We arrived at Merringtons Campsite in Walhalla, ready to hit the tracks the next day. Our journey took us through a series of low river crossings and steep climbs, leading us to Mount Matlock with its beautiful vistas (Elevation: 1,372m). We savored some lunch, enjoying the wonderful spot, and for those hearty souls willing to brave the winter, it's an epic location to camp amid the snow.

About Mount Matlock:

Mount Matlock is an exquisite geological wonder situated in the heart of Victoria, Australia. Standing tall at an elevation of 1,291 meters above sea level, this mountain is renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views, incredible hiking trails, and stunning natural beauty.

Located in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges, Mount Matlock is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. With its crisp mountain air, lush greenery, and spectacular vistas, it provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Our next destination was Woods Point- a lovely, historic township. It serves as a starting point for adventures to picturesque river-side campsites and thrilling 4x4 tracks. One must not leave Woods Point without taking a snapshot in front of Victoria's most iconic petrol station- a remnant of the gold rush that captured the region during the 19th century.

As the campsites were filling up quickly, we decided to venture off the beaten path, hoping to find a more secluded site. Following a narrow track and driving through a few decent bog holes, we came across a hidden gem- a tranquil riverside campsite tucked away from the crowds. Overall, our weekend was a great success filled with campfires, good company, and the soothing sound of the river lulling us to sleep.
