Wonnangatta Valley

A remote grassy valley ringed by steep ranges, site of the Wonnangatta Station homestead and the unsolved 1917-18 murders, reached down steep spurs such as Zeka and Herne or via the Crooked River Track, which has about 24 river crossings in under 8 km near Talbotville. The access tracks are gated from June to late October, and a bushfire burnt through the valley in January 2026.

Before you go Ask Parks Victoria before you go about hazard trees and washouts since the January 2026 fire, and whether the valley camps now need booking. Fill up at Dargo or Licola; there is no fuel in between.

    Long, steep, loose spurs and rutted crossing exits need clearance and suspension in good condition.

    Zeka Spur turns to slick clay in the wet, and there is no mobile coverage to call for help.

      Crooked River Track crossings were measured at 800 to 900 mm in March 2024 and rise much higher after rain.

    • 4 · Rock sliders

      Sharp rock and steep, rutted pinches on Zeka Spur put the sills and underbody against the ground.

    • 5 · Lighting & 12V

      A dual battery keeps the fridge running for several nights of remote valley camping.

    • 6 · Storage & racks

      The camps have little more than drop toilets, so food, water treatment and camp gear all come with you.

    • 7 · Bull bars

      A winch-rated bar mounts a winch for the steep spurs and guards against deer and wallabies.
